How to claim your NI Refund

The State Pension changed from April 2010. More people now qualify for a full basic State Pension.

On 6 April 2010, the way you qualify for a State Pension changed:

- To get a full basic State Pension, you only need 30 qualifying years of National Insurance contributions (in the past, men normally needed 44 years and women 39 years)
- Once you have built up a single qualifying year you qualify for at least some basic State Pension
- It is easier for parents and carers to build up qualifying years and get a State Pension.

Can I still get a NI Rebate?

It isn't possible anymore to get a NI rebate if you are leaving the UK. However you can still get a Tax refund.

Please note if you are planning to work in Europe, you can ask to the Department of ork and Pension (DWP) to transfer you UK pension to an european country of your choice such as France.

It includes a multi lateral agreement on social security. If you work in another EU State for longer than a year you have to start paying social security there.

When you return to the UK you can then claim the benefits you would have received in the other European country.

The advantage here is that almost everywhere else in Europe the state pension schemes are much better than the UK's.
